If you’ve been watching the hiring headlines lately, you’ve probably noticed something confusing: job ads are growing again, but so is unemployment. Turns out, both things are true, and understanding why is the difference between hiring smart this year and getting left behind.
The Good News: Ads Are Bouncing Back
After 11 straight quarters of decline, online job ads in New Zealand have now grown for four quarters in a row, up 7% year-on-year to June 2026. This isn’t a one-sector blip either. Seven of nine industries and nine of ten regions saw growth, with Auckland posting its second annual increase since 2022.
Interestingly, the strongest gains aren’t in the corner office. Machinery operators, drivers, sales roles, and labourers are leading the charge, meaning this recovery is being felt on the shop floor as much as (or more than) in management.
The Catch: More People Are Chasing Fewer Roles
Unemployment just hit 5.6%, its highest in over a decade, with roughly 171,000 Kiwis out of work. But here’s the twist: employment actually grew 0.5% over the quarter too. So what’s going on?
More people are entering the workforce and actively job-hunting. Labour force participation climbed from 70.4% to 70.7%. That’s a bigger pool of jobseekers than jobs, and it shows. SEEK reports applications per job ad hit a record high, up 11% month-on-month, even as ad volumes dipped.
Young jobseekers are feeling this hardest. Unemployment among 15 to 24 year-olds jumped nearly 20% year-on-year. Businesses that build proper graduate, apprenticeship, and entry-level pathways will have first pick of a motivated, underused talent pool.
Winners and Laggards
Not every sector is moving the same direction:
- Growing: Public administration (+4%), financial services (+3%), healthcare (+1.8%), education (+1.5%)
- Shrinking: Professional, scientific & technical services (-1.8%)
A one-size-fits-all hiring plan won’t cut it. What works for a healthcare employer won’t necessarily work for a tech firm right now.
What This Means If You’re Hiring
- Move fast. Strong candidates aren’t sitting around in a market this competitive.
- Look past job titles. Transferable skills matter more when experienced candidates are scarce in some sectors and flooded in others.
- Get your immigration and visa compliance sorted early. New English-language and Skilled Migrant rules kick in through August 2026.
- Use AI to speed up matching and screening, but keep humans in charge of the final call.
New Zealand’s job market isn’t broken, it’s recalibrating. Ads are up, but so is competition. That’s actually good news for employers with the right strategy: there’s real talent out there, if you know how to find and move on it faster than everyone else scrambling for the same shortlist.
